TEMPORARY accommodation from the Commonwealth Games athletes village will be moved to regional towns and suburban Melbourne for use as social housing.
The State Government yesterday confirmed that 20 of the 115 transportable units that housed athletes during last month's Games were destined for use by the Office of Housing. The units will be transported to Moe, Shepparton, Braybrook, Colac, Horsham, Delacombe, Norlane and Robinvale. All will be retro-fitted with kitchens. The plan, revealed by The Age last year, will be complemented by an allocation of social housing inside the village. There will be 100 residences and a 100-bed aged-care facility. The Victorian Government initially promised that 200 residences inside the athletes village would be reserved for social housing alone.
